People tend to think there’s a secret to losing weight and then keeping it off. But the only real secret is you must be consistent with your daily habits. Consistency with your daily habits is easier when you create the SPACE to show up for yourself each day.
It’s harder to consistently show up for yourself each day when your life feels so cluttered with all the thousands of decisions you must make. What should I cook for dinner tonight? When do I need to pick up the kids at camp today to get them to practice on time? Should we eat at 4 pm before practice or 8 pm when we finally get home? These are just some of the decisions we may make at home; add on all the work-related decisions, and no wonder you’re overwhelmed!
One place to start creating more space for yourself is to simplify your life by making fewer decisions each day.
And what’s one of the first decisions you must make daily?
WHAT TO WEAR!
This might sound like an odd place to start. Still, I found myself wasting HOURS shopping for clothes, returning clothes, or searching through my closet and trying on a million different pants to find a pair I felt confident and comfortable wearing each day. Listen, there’s a reason Steve Jobs wore the same black turtleneck every day for YEARS: he had one less decision to make each day and could focus on what was really important.
Whether we want to admit it or not, what we wear is still important since others will pass judgment based on our appearance, and our clothes are a big part of that in both our personal and professional lives! And let’s not forget about the impact on our confidence level when we are wearing something that works so well for our body and lifestyle.
After years of wasting time, I learned a simple strategy to save time and reduce my stress by eliminating this one decision to make each day!
We all have to decide what to wear when we get ready in the morning. This one strategy I use is something you can implement immediately to start saving time and creating more space in your day for you!
Let me introduce you to my seasonal uniform strategy!
That’s right; I have two seasonal uniforms I’ve decided on and repeat each day that work best for my current body and lifestyle and make me feel comfortable and confident!
Creating your seasonal uniform starts with using two of my uncluttering principles – “decide then repeat” and “know what’s most important to YOU”. These are two of the principles we use in my group program – Unclutter Your Life. Let’s dive into how I use these two principles to decide what to wear daily.
I’ve found what style & colors work best for my body shape now, not for the body I may want in the future. Honestly, I don’t love my legs and never have! The level of leanness that it would require to drop some of the body fat I carry on my legs doesn’t match the lifestyle I like to live, and that means I carry around a little extra body fat on my thighs, and I don’t always feel comfortable showing off my thighs. This doesn’t mean I hate my body! It’s just a reality that we’ll all have some parts we’d rather not highlight over others.
So even if it’s trendy, I won’t feel comfortable in clothes that highlight my legs. So, I’ll avoid shorts with less than a 5″ inseam. I’ll look for maxi or midi dresses and skirts over mini length. And I’ll opt for clothes that show off my arms where I feel more confident and, therefore, more comfortable.
Knowing what parts of my body I want to highlight and the parts I don’t reduces the time I spend on clothing purchases since I’m not wasting any time or money trying on and purchasing styles I just won’t wear.
Seasonal uniforms work best when you also consider your lifestyle. I currently work from home and in the fitness/nutrition space, so I rarely need to dress up anymore, and I can buy more athleisure wear to sport regularly. But I didn’t always have it this way and spent over 20 years sporting more Ann Taylor suits with nylons than I’d like to remember! If anyone still has to wear nylons to work, please know I feel for you!
I wish I had used this seasonal uniforms approach in my corporate days! It would have saved me so much time and energy and allowed me to feel more confident walking into boardroom meetings or presenting at internal town halls. It’s just me and my cats on Zoom today, so my uniform is a bit different!
So, consider your lifestyle when thinking about what’s most important to you regarding what you want to wear—work from home, commuting to the office in bad weather, or a hybrid office schedule. You may need 2-3 variations based on what works best for you.
Based on these decisions, I’ve created my two seasonal uniforms, so I don’t even think about what I will wear each morning and just throw it on and get on with my day! No more staring into the closet. No more trying on a dozen different outfits. No more piles of clothes heaped on my bed to come home at the end of the day after I rushed out the door since I wasted so much time that morning finding a pencil skirt that fit and felt comfortable!
I now have one less decision to make each morning, reducing my stress, saving me time, and creating more space for the things I really want to focus on but used to struggle to fit in like spending less distracted time with my boys, my workouts, walks and preparing balanced meals!
Seasonal Uniforms work because they reduce the number of decisions you have to make about what to wear each day and what clothes to buy, and this will save you time, energy, and bonus – MONEY too!
Here’s what my seasonal uniforms look like. This is not a suggestion for you to copy and wear exactly what I do! It’s just an example for you to see, then decide what will work best for YOU!
I have my Summer Uniform and my Other Seasons Uniform since that’s just how it works here in New England! My Summer Uniform consists of a high-neck tank top paired with 5″ or longer shorts and either sneakers or flip-flops. My Other Seasons Uniform consists of a long tunic sweater and leggings I wear with winter boots or sneakers. That’s it! That’s how I dress 99% of the time unless I attend a wedding or other special occasion. You can check out photos of my seasonal uniforms below!
I use the two uncluttering principles of “decide then repeat” and “know what’s most important to YOU” to make one less decision each day. This one less decision compounds into HOURS saved each month.
This is just one lesson from my group program Unclutter Your Life where I help you come up with dozens of other strategies to reduce the number of decisions you make each day in your home and schedule so you can create more SPACE for YOU, making it easier to show up for yourself in those ways that feel so hard today! So you build a life where you no longer feel so overwhelmed with decisions that you just want to quit!
