Cleaning out your closet feels great until you see the huge pile of clothes on the floor ready to pass along. Then you find yourself asking how you get them to a new home? And can you make some money off the items in good condition? The good news is there are now many online consignment and donation options making it easier than ever to get unused items out of your home while possibly adding some cash to your bank account. Below are a few options to check out. Some are easier than others but I’ve found that the more effort I put in the more money I make. So it’s really up to you to decide if it’s more about convenience or return on investment.
ThreadUP makes it extremely easy to try and sell women’s and children’s clothes and accessories online. You simply order a clean out kit, fill it up with your items and drop it off at USPS. ThreadUP will go through your bag and decide which items they will accept and pay you out a percentage. They’ll donate the rest unless you pay to have them shipped back to you. In my experience, you shouldn’t expect to get huge payouts for each individual item on ThreadUP but if convenience is important to you this is a great choice.
Here’s another site where you can easily request a bag, fill it up, send it back, and get 30% of what they price your items or 50% in trade credit. It works very similar to ThreadUp. They also have some store locations you can check out if one is close to your home.
With the Give Back box you can easily reuse the box from your recent Nordstrom’s order, pack it up with gently used clothes, shoes, and accessories, and print a prepaid shipping label to donate your items to charities. Seems like a good option if you use the 1 in 1 out rule for minimizing your wardrobe!
If you’re willing to put in more effort and want to control how much you earn off of each individual item, I suggest trying to sell items on Poshmark. This app is super easy to use but will take more effort to take pictures, respond to offers, and ship out individual items. Once the item sells Poshmark provides you with a shipping label to print out. If you don’t mind a few trips back and forth to the post office it can really be worth your time. In the last year I’ve made almost $900 on Poshmark from selling clothes, shoes, and accessories I no longer need.
So there are a few options to consider. I hope it helps and inspires you to do some purging this weekend!
