Game Storage

If you’ve been following this blog for the past few months, you know how much I like having an organized system in place to keep life in order.  But I also don’t like to spend a ton of time and money to make everything look picture perfect.  Life is busy and for me, it’s important to have things be organized, but not require an over the top time-intensive project to get there. Today I’m sharing a simple, easy, and extremely useful organizing tip for games.

Like our Art Cart, I’ve found that the easier my kids can access their games and toys the more likely they are to use them regularly.  For years I had our board games and puzzles stacked on each other in deep drawers and the boys would rarely initiate playing games on their own.  So I knew I needed a way to display the games but also keep them out of sight since they aren’t the prettiest option for decorating your living room!  I also had space in the coat closet in our living room on the first floor of our house. We use the basement to enter and exit and don’t store coats or other items in this closet.  Also, unlike the rest of our house, the coat closet had extra space.

I decided to purchase a hanging sweater organizer that easily hangs from the rod in the closet.  The majority of all our games fit nicely stacked in the organizer and the kids can scan all of them quickly.  The organizer I have has two drawers at the bottom where we store smaller items like cards, dominos, and travel-size games.  We go through games about once a year, usually before the holidays, to see which ones the kids have outgrown and want to pass on to other friends and family or donate to our church’s annual Harvest Moon Fair.

This project is super simple, doesn’t involve much effort, and has made a huge difference in our house.  Game night is now a regular event and often several nights a week!
